Inmates go on sausage 'temper tantrum' - A.P.
Some Lea County inmates set fires and broke toilets and windows after being told they would be allowed only one sausage at dinner. Jail officials said the inmates began yelling and banging on their doors in what they described in a news release as a "temper tantrum."
Officers from the Lea County Sheriff's and Hobbs Police departments were called in to restore control, and the jail was locked down after Tuesday night's incident.
Some 33 prisoners were involved, Warden Jann Gartman said.
The remaining 300-plus prisoners at the jail accepted the meal without incident, authorities said.
The damage to the jail was light, with some smoke damage and broken toilets and windows, the warden said. [end]

A cure for road rage: close road - L.A. Times
Motorists angry at construction delays threatened road workers and damaged equipment. Also, flagmen have been attacked in what officials describe as bizarre incidents of road rage. Two workers were hit by cars and a third was shot with a BB gun. Now in an unprecedented response to ill will, Caltrans has announced it will close a portion of the highway beginning Monday to complete the project.
...
The highway project is a modest attempt to improve safety on the mostly two-lane route long known by locals as "Blood Alley" and "California Deathway" because of the number of accidents.
...
They were cursed at and had objects, including a burrito, flung at them. Other workers' equipment was sabotaged. One motorist threatened to climb a water tower and shoot workers with a high-powered rifle ... But since last fall, three workers have been physically attacked or otherwise harmed by motorists. In the first incident, last September, a driver refused to stop ... "Other flagmen told him he wasn't permitted through and he said, 'I'm not waiting. I'm not going back,' and just floored it." ... In late November, on the 138 at the landmark known as Mormon Rock, an elderly woman in a van drove through the site, striking another flagman and breaking his back. ...

On Hit Lists, Anger Finds an Outlet - N.Y. Times
TWO teenagers in Jonesboro, Ark., were overheard at a party last month bragging about a “hit list” and their plans to take a gun to school and use it on their enemies.
...
No hit list was found, but in other cases at schools across the country, hit lists have fallen out of lockers, been scrawled on bathroom walls and have made the rounds like hot gossip among teenagers in Web videos and on blogs.
For reasons that are largely unclear to the authorities, the lists have gained toxic traction with a sub-set of students even as rates of school violence have dropped significantly since the early 1990s. Education and law enforcement officials say it is hard to know in any given case whether students write the lists as an actual blueprint for deadly action or to simply attract attention, amuse themselves, act out bravado or bully other students.
...
The lists are typically long and often include gradations in the level of hate expressed, such as “to kill,” “to hurt” or “to knock out cold.” Sometimes the lists include the names of the students to be protected should schoolwide mayhem erupt. ...

Indian brides pay a high price - International Herald Tribune
Once the wedding guests were all assembled, the father of the bride brought out a large metal tray on which he had piled up 51,000 rupees (in notes of 10 and 50 rupees, to make the heap look larger) and handed it to the groom.
A new television and sofa were conspicuously displayed in the same room, so that every member of the party could see what was being offered from the bride's family to the groom as a dowry. ...
Unfortunately for Kamlesh, the 18-year-old bride, who uses only one name, the payment from her father, Misrilal, was insufficient. Her new husband had expected a scooter; his parents had wanted more than the 51,000 rupees - about $1,100 - that they got. During three years of marriage, the requests for an extended dowry settlement began to be accompanied by worsening bouts of violence - until in August, he beat her over the head with a wooden stick, tied her up and locked her in the cow shed as she bled profusely.
Violent dowry harassment is an increasingly visible phenomenon in India.
...
The burden both of dowry payments and lavish weddings is one of the main reasons why female feticide - the practice of aborting female fetuses - remains widespread in India. Earlier this year a report in The Lancet, a British medical journal, indicated that as many as 10 million female fetuses may have been aborted in India over the past 20 years by families trying to avoid the expense of having a daughter and hoping to secure themselves a male heir.

Severed Lives: Family and Friend Left behind - part of the Philadelphia Inquirer's Kids, Guns, and a Deadly Toll series, which includes profiles of the murdered children
..."My son loved to rap and challenge people," Adams says. "I told him, 'I want you to stop battling, because some people can't handle things.' The grudge came in because my son beat him rapping... and one thing led to another."
Kareek Adams was one of 24 young people - ages 3 to 17 - who were killed by gunfire this year in the eight-county Philadelphia region.
Nearly half appear to have been killed mistakenly - in gun accidents or by assailants aiming at others.
Almost all the rest were shot because of jealousy or perceived disrespect, or disputes over turf, drugs or girls.
"Is it just expected for the children to kill each other with guns?" asks Israe Gilliard. In July, her nephew Jarrett Gore, 15, was preparing to settle an argument with fists when he was shot by an acquaintance.
...
For weeks now, Adams has haunted the El like a ghost, using her cell phone to photograph strangers who look like the mug shot of the man police think killed her son.
The other day in the grocery store, she was sure she saw the gunman. She got so close and stared so hard that when she finally realized it wasn't him, she lied and told him she thought they had once dated.
...
When two teens robbed Robert's other sister, 19-year-old Lauren, in September, she was "more mad than upset." She refused to give up her purse until one youth suggested they shoot her; then, when the boy with the gun fled, she chased the other, who had taken the bag. She asked him to give her back something - anything - from the purse. "I said, 'Really, my brother just died. I don't need this!' "
But he refused.
...
Gussie Favors was at Sadir Reddy's house that day with Evens Occean, and the three friends were about to go shopping downtown.
According to court testimony, Sadir, 16, had been showing off his prized .380 semiautomatic for weeks. The question was: Who would carry the gun to the Gallery?
Gussie volunteered because he had the biggest coat. He started "twirling" the weapon - a weapon shared so often among the friends that during Sadir's trial it was referred to at least once as "a community gun."
According to Evens, Sadir had taken the pistol back to adjust the safety when the gun fired into Gussie's chest.
Gussie's dad doesn't buy it. "I think he meant to do it," Augustus Favors says of Sadir, although he acknowledges that "if that was my son that shot him, I might be thinking a different story."
Immediately after the shooting, Sadir called 911 to say a mysterious gunman had shot Gussie. Then he ran from the scene where his friend lay dying. ...

Murder, They Blogged - Time
On Feb. 3, 17-year-old Bryan Grove allegedly stabbed to death his girlfriend's mother in the bedroom of her suburban Denver home. Friends say that he and Tess Damm, 15, hated Linda Damm because of her drinking. Police found Damm's body, crammed into the trunk of a garaged car, when they arrested Bryan and Tess more than three weeks later ... What is extraordinary about this case is that Tess and Bryan apparently documented their feelings in their MySpace.com blogs in the weeks before the murder and during the 25 days in which Linda Damm's body remained undiscovered.

Police say that when Bryan offered to murder Tess's mother, Tess didn't believe him — replying, "Whatever," according to the arrest affidavit.

Marines Open Fire After Afghan Ambush - Washington Post
At Least 8 Civilians Dead; Witnesses Fault Troops' Response to Assault on Convoy
At least eight Afghan civilians were killed Sunday in eastern Afghanistan when U.S. Marines traveling in a convoy were hit by a car bomb and responded by firing in a way that some witnesses called reckless.
The incident, which the U.S. military said resulted from a "complex ambush," was followed by angry demonstrations in which hundreds of Afghans took to the streets, many chanting anti-government and anti-American slogans.

The incident is the latest to spark public outrage over the perception that foreign troops are not taking enough precautions to avoid civilian casualties. Last May, for instance, a U.S. military cargo truck lost control and struck 12 vehicles, killing one person and injuring six. Shooter 'angry at life, God' - Seattle P-I
A milk-truck driver carrying three guns and a childhood grudge entered a one-room Amish schoolhouse Monday, sent the boys and adults outside, barricaded the doors with two-by-fours, and then opened fire on a dozen girls, killing three people before committing suicide.
At least seven other victims were critically wounded, authorities said.
Most of the victims had been shot execution-style at point-blank range after being lined up along the chalkboard, their feet bound with wire and plastic ties, authorities said. Two young students were killed, along with a female teacher's aide who was slightly older than the students, state police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said.

From the suicide notes and telephone calls, it was clear Roberts was "angry at life, he was angry at God," Miller said. ...
Miller said investigators were looking into the possibility that the attack might have been related to the death of one of Roberts' own children. According to an obituary, Roberts and his wife, Marie, lost a daughter shortly after she was born in 1997. ...

Two young students were killed, along with a female teacher's aide who was slightly older than the students, state police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said.
...
From the suicide notes and telephone calls, it was clear Roberts was "angry at life, he was angry at God," Miller said. ...
Miller said investigators were looking into the possibility that the attack might have been related to the death of one of Roberts' own children. According to an obituary, Roberts and his wife, Marie, lost a daughter shortly after she was born in 1997. ...

Man jailed for strangling ex-wife - BBC News
He admitted killing ex-wife Deana Noddings during a confrontation when she tried to stab him with a knife.
...
He said she had been "winding him up" during a row about her affair with a work colleague.
The prosecution alleged during the trial that Noddings was a violent man who had regularly attacked his wife throughout their stormy relationship.
They claimed a letter written by Mrs Noddings, found in a drawer in her office in the days after her death, proved that she knew she was in danger and was in fear of her life.
He told the jury that his wife had affairs with seven different men during their marriage but he was unable to stay away because he "loved her to bits".

Domestic killings shock Swiss - BBC News
Corinne Rey-Bellet was shot by her husband Gerold Stadler just days after the couple had agreed to separate.
Stadler also shot and killed Rey-Bellet's brother Alain, and seriously wounded her mother, before finally killing himself.
...
"There is a profile for a man who commits a crime like this," says Philip Jaffe, professor of psychology at Geneva University.
"He tends to be very ambitious, but isolated, very contained, and he can't cope with loss. So if his wife threatens to leave him, his response is violence."
All the recent cases, including that of Rey-Bellet and Stadler, involved families who presented an outward appearance of normal, calm, orderly family life.
"Here in Switzerland we are brought up to expect everything to go according to plan," he explains.
"Just like our trains run on time, we've come to expect our lives to run to plan, and when they don't, we go wild."
...
Mr Boess blames the Swiss army's policy of requiring Swiss men, who all have to do military service, to keep their guns and ammunition at home in case of an emergency call-up.
What that means is that nearly all Swiss men have a Sturmgewehr - an assault rifle - stored somewhere in their homes. ...
"It's very common to hear women tell how their husbands remind them they have a gun in moments of tension," says Brigitte Schnegg, professor of gender politics at Berne University.
"They'll say: 'If you don't do what I want, don't forget I've got my gun upstairs.'"
...
"Family problems are seen as a defeat for the man, it all has to do with male honour." ...
